Statement der Perth Mint zur Weiterprägung des australischen Palladium-Emus von 1998

(03.07.2007 per Mail an mich)

Dear Mr Frank

Thank you for your email, I think there is some confusion regarding this subject and I hope I can resolve it for you.

According to our records we did sell a small number of bullion palladium coins in 1998, I am not prepared to disclose the exact figure.

At that time palladium was very expensive but our bullion coins were sold at wholesale at metal plus a small premium.

The quantities were small and we decided to discontinue our palladium coins due to high lease rates and low take up due to the high metal price.

Please understand these are bullion coins not collectible proof coins.

In 2006 we were approached by many dealers to look at palladium again. This was possibly in response to the Royal Canadian Mint selling all their palladium coins to an extremely limited dealer base, effectively creating a demand without supply to many dealers.

We conducted 2 trials of limited number using dies from 1998 bullion palladium and then sold them to the dealer for evaluation in the market place. These coins were struck within the mintage of 5000 pieces.

These coins were sold at the standard bullion rate and not at any inflated prices. Our trials showed how difficult it was to strike palladium and we had a high reject rate. As you know we pride ourselves on making high quality coins and we would not lower our quality standards. In addition the left over metal from the blanking process is extremely difficult to reprocess. From the resulting trials we have decided not to proceed with making palladium bullion coins.

I hope this helps and take the opportunity to remind you again that these are bullion coins not proof and we did not sell them at any inflated price. We are quite within our rights to trial small volumes of coins within the existing mintage.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to email me directly.

Kind Regards
